 Do skill points affect stats at all?

I just used 'Lunging Tackle' with one of my defenders and his statistics didn't change at all. How will the new skill affect game play?

 Skill points do not affect abilities, but rather have a direct impact on gameplay.

It's a technical distinction, but skill points are more powerful than attributes.
