I'm currently trying different advanced formations which I have put a lot of thought into, and one thing that seems to be standing out to me is that my defenders leave huge gaps in the middle while teams just boot a ball straight through.

In my squad I only have LDF / RDF's and no CDF's so I setup a defensive row of LB LDF RDF RB then in the advance formation I tweaked the LDF and RDF positions so they cover the centre more.

This doesn't appear to work and they are always too wide which leads me to believe that you can't play with LDF / RDF and no CDF. Are they only useful to play in a 3 or 5 man defence either side of a single CDF?
I suppose I am going to have to get new players and use LB CDF CDF RB

In a one cf format, cdf does the job but when the other team has wingers or a lf/rf you need rdfs and ldfs 22/09/2011 17:46

The way I saw it though was that LDF and RDF were what would be considered central defender in real life, just with a preferred side to play on.
I would say LB & RB are the defender who deal with wingers.

I think overall there is a discrepancy between what I consider the roles of many positions and what they do in this game. Another example is wingers as I would class them as an attacking midfielder and not a forward but there you go
